Some cars will only become understandable when their time is over. The second Volvo V70 – internally belonging to the P2/P26 family – is a good example of this. When he was new, he was simply considered a big Volvo combination. Today, it is clear that this generation marks a transition: still characterized by the unique Swedish engineering culture of the nineties, but already with the safety, suspension and comfort level of a modern long-haul vehicle.

Volvo had developed this generation with a remarkably simple goal: The combination should no longer be the reasonable alternative to the sedan, but at least equally desirable and comfortable. Project managers accordingly described him as a decisive carrier of the big Volvo-Kombi-Tradition. The result was a body whose shape had become softer but whose useful value remained untapped.

Under the hood of this Classic is one of the motors that belong essentially to that era: the B5244S. 2,435 cm3, five cylinders in series, two upper camshafts and a total of 20 valves. The suction motor delivers 125 kW or 170 hp. On the inlet side, CVVT – Continuous Variable Valve Timing, Volvo’s hydraulic camshaft adjustment, changes control times depending on load and speed.

The five-cylinder is more than a nostalgic sound motif. The design allowed Volvo for decades an exceptionally compact connection of transversely installed engine, front drive and large crumb zone without having to miss the more cultivated run of a larger multi-cylinder. Its odd number of cylinders also produces the characteristic, slightly offset sound color, where you can still hear a classic Volvo fountain cylinder before you see it.

With the B5244S, the proven five-stage Aisin-Warner-Automatic from the AW55 family works together. No double clutch, no eight or nine driving steps, but a classic hydraulic transducer and five cleanly graduated gears. For the 170 hp of the suction motor, this is not an emergency solution, but part of the essence of this car: the V70 does not want to drive permanently, but lets go kilometers.

This copy comes from Japan and has only travelled 32,000 kilometers. Black full leather, automatic, air conditioning and the classic equipment form a V70 that does not have to be limited to Sunday trips. It is precisely his low wear that makes him attractive: one not only gets an old Volvo here, but a P26 where a considerable part of his mechanical life has not yet taken place. The B5244S does not need 300 hp and no artificial intake noise. Five cylinders, 2.4 liters, 170 hp, Aisin converter automation and a large empty space behind the rear seats – more was never absolutely necessary for an exceptionally good travel car. This one has something you can't reorder: only 32,000 kilometers of past life.
