When Volvo presented the new V70 in 2007, then design manager Steve Mattin described the great combination as the crown jewel of the brand. The claim was remarkable: a vehicle that had been a tool, family car and long-haul machine for decades should become more luxurious and dynamic without losing its almost proverbial utility. This V70 T5 Summum comes from this generation.

Under his hood, however, there is a detail that even many Volvo drivers are surprised at: The abbreviation T5 no longer refers to the classic Volvo fine cylinder. This late T5 is driven by the B4204T7 – a 1,999 cm3 four-cylinder with turbocharge and direct gasoline injection. Volvo led the unit with 177 kW or 240 hp according to the factory specification; from the metrical conversion, 241 hp appear in German vehicle data. More interesting than the peak performance are its 320 Nm, which are already present at 1,800/min and are available almost completely up to 5,000/min. The engine does not live from speed theatre, but from an unusually wide usable range.

The second look is also worth the gear. This is not the classic Geartronic, often connected to the V70, but the MPS6, which belongs to the B4204T7 combination, Volvo's six-stage Powershift dual clutch transmission. It connects the direct power connection of two partial gears to the convenience of an automatic machine and thus fits surprisingly well to the character of this T5: quiet in everyday life, but immediately in case of power requirement.

The rest is V70 in its perhaps most perfect everyday form. A large, clear body, an almost cuboidally usable luggage compartment and that long Volvo tradition, not to treat safety as individual special equipment, but as a basic architecture. In the Summum version black leather, electrically adjustable driver seat with memory function, seat heating, air conditioning, RTI navigation, Bi-Xenon headlight with dynamic corner light, BLIS, electric tailgate and numerous comfort details are added. WHIPS, side and head airbags as well as Isofix complete the unexcited safety culture for which Volvo developed this generation. Its origin from Japan is by no means marginal in a V70. Especially large European vehicles often came in the hands of very careful holders through their first car life; Scatter salt loading and Central European winter also played a significantly lower role. In this car, this is shown in a body and underbody substance which is rust-free according to the present information and an above-averagely maintained interior.

The charm of this T5 is therefore not in a single spectacular feature. It consists of B4204T7, 320 Nm wide torque plateau, summum equipment and the almost irrational practical gift of a V70. A fast combination that doesn't have to look like he wants to be one – and that's why it still looks amazingly sovereign.
