For over 50 years, there was no new Audi convertible: When the production of the 920 in 1940 was stopped due to the Second World War, this meant the end of a tradition. Only in 1991 there was another car from the Audi brand with fabric top. He was based on the Audi 80 B4, which was itself a further development of the successful B3 series. The convertible benefited from this proven base as well as from the fact that Audi had introduced full interest for the B3. First of all, the convertible was only available with the known 2,3 liter 5-cylinder engine. A 2,6-liter V6 followed in 1992, 4-cylinder Otto- and – for the first time in a convertible – turbodiesel engines completed the program. All Audi convertibles had front drive – i.e., a quattro was not available – and were equipped either with a 5-speed manual transmission or a 4-speed automatic transmission. An electrohydraulicly operated top was available from 1993. While the Audi 80 Limousine was replaced in 1996 by the first generation of the A4, the convertible continued until the year 2000. In the last two years, production was carried out at Karmann in Rheine. A total of 71.510 convertibles have been built, with their elegant design and high quality of processing already considered classic today.
