In October 1948, Citroën unveiled a 2CV with an air-cooled engine on the Paris car salon, which the satirical weekly Le Canard commented: “A canned can, model free camping for four sardines.” Since steel as raw material was rar, Citroën was able to initially produce only a few cars and a waiting list of up to six years was created for a short time. After the start of production in July 1949, farmers, doctors, midwives, pastors and traders were first served. The purchase price of the 2CV was quite low, because thanks to the simple technology, maintenance costs could be kept very small. This led to the "Ente" becoming a typical student car in Germany. In France, the Citroën 2CV had a similar status as the VW Beetle in Germany.
When the Dyane was finally presented in 1967, there were speculations about the end of the 2CV, but the duck survived two more succession models, the LN and the Visa. Only in February 1988 the production of the 2CV in France was discontinued in the Citroën plant of Levallois-Perret. In Portugal’s Citroen plant Mangualde, the final last car (a grey 2CV6 ‘Charleston’) was built on 27 July 1990.
The first owner (born in 1943) bought the duck offered here as a new car and finally reported it in April 1998. From then on, the car stood in a hall and lasted for years its existence until in 2021 an elaborate restoration began, which ultimately ended in a new construction. Numerous invoices prove the immense effort that has been done here. A car. - Experts then judge the car after completion in May 2024 with a (very optimistic) market value of €32.640. Among other things, his expert opinion shows: "The vehicle was completely disassembled and completely reassembled with new parts. The top material was refurbished by a sunlight, all screws were renewed and the frame was refurbished. The vehicle was technically and optically switched into a new state". To the state of the vehicle it is possible to read: "A new car corresponding".
I don't share these assessments, because the duck is very good, but not perfect - just a car you can drive with and should do it. I'd like to show you the car in my exhibition!
